Proven Results: See What Our Patients Say About Their ACL Journey

Eve, Gymnast

Dr. Andrew Kenas and I have been working together for close to a year now and I can say, without a doubt, he has provided the highest level of care and professionalism that I could have hoped for. Andrew is fully invested in my recovery and the recovery of each of his patients…

Andrew puts together recovery plans that are specialized and specific to the needs of his patient. He often seeks out and introduces treatments and exercises that further enhance the recovery process. He plans well, together with his patients and packs each visit with beneficial rehabilitative exercise and education. I highly recommend Andrew Kenas to anyone who is in need of a doctor that will provide personalized attention, first rate care and who makes the often difficult recovery process enjoyable.

Kyle, Baseball Athlete

After my ACL knee surgery in September of 2018 I had initially started my physical therapy with the hospital that performed the surgery. With the end goal in mind of getting back into sports/crossfit workouts/spartan races, my progress had essentially stopped after 8 months…

and they could not figure out why. I was still having pain while running and was not gaining strength in my quad muscle, which was very frustrating. To add to the frustration, I was not receiving 1 on 1 attention with the physical therapists as they split their time with multiple patients per session (made it really difficult to ask questions and they really were not paying attention). I decided to look at other physical therapists and met with Andrew for an evaluation. From day 1 he was able to diagnose what the other physical therapists had overlooked and gave me the 1 on 1 experience that I needed. We took a few steps back to take a giant leap forward, so to say. He takes the time to explain the exercises, breaks down proper form, and even explains how each exercise is going to help with your specific situation. Having him help plan exactly which workouts that I needed to do outside of our sessions really took the guessing out of the equation and made a huge difference for me. I would absolutely recommend Andrew to anyone that is struggling with an injury and wants to see real results. He tailors everything completely to you and really knows his stuff.

Kim, CrossFit Athlete

I can’t thank the Charlotte Athlete enough for everything they’ve done for my knee. I have had 3 total ACL repairs, 2 on the right and 1 on the left. I started to feel a catch or a clicking that really limited my mobility. At first I just thought “it’s just your bad knee”…

After a while of it still bothering me, I reached out for help. The Charlotte Athlete was working at our gym in Statesville, when I had asked some questions. From that discussion we decided it was probably best to start with an evaluation into some PT to help my mobility. After a bit of PT and the mobility wasn’t improving we decided to have imaging done. The results weren’t what I wanted to hear, but I tore my meniscus. Another surgery. But Charlotte Athlete had confidence in me that I could recover from yet another knee surgery. We did some pre-surgery strengthening and immediately after surgery got back to work. They were able to get me back to feeling like myself, comfortable in a squat, able to do a box jumps etc. They are genuinely awesome people!

THE 5 STEP ACL SUCCESS PLAN

Step 1:
Restore Range of Motion; MAINTAIN STRENGTH & FITNESS

After surgery, your muscles begin to atrophy and lose strength almost immediately. The sooner we intervene during your early rehabilitation to mitigate this loss, the swifter our progress will be in the later stages.

During the initial phase of recovery, a primary focus is on reclaiming your range of motion. Post-surgery, your knee will be notably stiff. Regaining full flexibility, particularly the ability to straighten your knee promptly, is pivotal for a successful recovery.

It’s also essential to remember that only one leg underwent surgery. We’ll devise a plan to keep you actively training your unaffected leg and upper body, ensuring safe options to sustain your cardiovascular fitness throughout your recovery journey.

Step 2:
Restore Physical Capacity

In the realm of athletics, success hinges on a handful of core attributes. We liken these attributes to the foundation of a pyramid, prioritizing their development sequentially to minimize setbacks and maximize progress. Leveraging cutting-edge measurement technologies, we objectively assess your advancement, signaling the appropriate time to ascend to the next tier.

During Step 2 – the intermediary phase of your rehabilitation journey – our team collaborates closely with you to reestablish foundational levels of strength and power. With our Doctors of Physical Therapy, who are experts not only in therapy but also in strength and conditioning, you’ll receive tailored programs meticulously crafted to shepherd you through each stage. The onus falls on you to dedicate yourself to the process – now is when the heavy duty work begins.

Step 3:
Speed and Agility

Once you’ve mastered the fundamental levels of flexibility, strength, and power, we seamlessly integrate these abilities into dynamic movements mirroring those encountered on the field.

In personalized sessions alongside your Doctor of Physical Therapy, you’ll engage in sprinting, cutting, and abrupt stops. This hands-on approach ensures not only proficiency in executing these maneuvers with optimal mechanics but also cultivates comfort and confidence in applying these skills before you reenter practice or competition.

Step 4:
Testing and Return to Play

Every athlete’s recovery is unique, so the only way to ensure your body is fully healed is by measuring and tracking your progress. This approach helps us verify the program’s effectiveness and confirms you’re ready to safely return to the field.

Research indicates that following even basic objective test protocols can reduce the risk of a second ACL tear by up to 84 percent. However, many healthcare professionals do not use objective testing before recommending a return to play. A recent study found that only 14 percent of physical therapists utilize objective measures beyond the time elapsed since surgery when clearing an athlete to return to sports. Simply waiting for time to pass is insufficient for healing and strengthening your leg.

Step 5:
Maintenance

One of the most crucial steps to reducing your risk of re-injury is adhering to a structured maintenance program. Upon completing your treatment at our clinic, you will receive a comprehensive plan for returning to your sport and maintaining your fitness throughout the season and beyond.

We will equip you with a detailed, evidence-based warm-up protocol designed to minimize your risk of re-injury. Additionally, you will receive an in-season strength training regimen to maintain your strength during the competitive season.

Moreover, we offer periodic reassessments for up to two years post-injury to monitor your progress and ensure that any asymmetries between your injured and uninjured legs—corrected during your rehabilitation—do not reemerge.

Combining an effective rehab program, objective readiness assessments, and a thorough maintenance plan will help you overcome the odds and continue to excel in your sport.
